Straggas, the video incorporates footage from the 1949 crime film Johnny Stool Pigeon, bringing a vintage cinematic backdrop to the band’s snarling guitars and raw garage rock ’n’ roll energy.Watch “Where’s Johnny Now” hereAlready part of the Nervous Eaters’ live repertoire by 1979, “Where’s Johnny Now” reaches back to the band’s early days while carrying a message that remains just as urgent: the hope of reaching a friend before they slip too far away.“Everybody has a Johnny in their life, with any luck friends can pull them back into the Real World before he’s gone gone gone !”says singer, guitarist and songwriter Steve Cataldo. The song introduces an album that reconnects Nervous Eaters with the grit, swagger and punk spirit that helped make them a cornerstone of Boston’s early underground scene. Featuring newly recorded songs drawn from the band’s history, Eat or Be Eaten also includes “C.A.L.F.L.A.,” released in 2025.Emerging in 1976, Nervous Eaters became closely associated with Boston’s legendary Rat nightclub. Led by Cataldo, the band developed a sound rooted in blues, garage rock and uncompromising rock ’n’ roll, helping shape the city’s formative punk scene. Nearly five decades later, that same restless spirit drives Eat or Be Eaten.“Where’s Johnny Now” is out now via Wicked Cool Records. “The Nervous Eaters have that eclectic Boston heritage. There never was a real ‘Boston sound,’ but with the Eaters, there’s some roots attached to it. I associate the Boston sound going back to the big ones: Barry and the Remains, The J. Geils Band and Aerosmith. You can see Steve Cataldo’s evolution from the punk world to post-punk. I can hear a bit of Bowie, Petty, The Kinks. They’re gonna make Boston proud again.” ~ Stevie Van Zandt“The Nervous Eaters were among the leading lights of Boston’s flourishing pop-punk scene in the late 1970s. Their resurrection album shows they’ve only enhanced their hooks, headlong acceleration, and gift for inspiring song. Play it loud and proud”. ~ Lenny Kaye |
