Detroit-based songwriter John Salvage traces the distance between where he comes from and who he has become on his latest album, Ohio. Across 12 songs, Salvage turns complicated relationships, familiar roads and years of self-examination into his most honest and vulnerable collection yet—a record rooted in the Midwest, with its restless heart on full display.Listen to / Purchase OhioOriginally from Perrysburg, Ohio, Salvage has spent the past 15 years living in the Greater Detroit area, building on the heartland rock sensibilities that have shaped more than a decade of solo and collaborative releases. On Ohio, intimate acoustic arrangements sit alongside rustic, electric guitar-driven anthems, connecting the directness of folk songwriting with the grit and emotional reach of rock ’n’ roll.“I wanted to make as big of a personal statement as I could,” Salvage told BG Independent. “It’s not a concept album by any means, but it’s definitely conceptual as it’s a reflection on my life for the past 15 years living in Detroit. The songs are by far the most personal I’ve ever written.”That personal history takes shape through images of trains, roads, smoke and nighttime streets. These are songs about home as both a place and a feeling: something to return to, something to reckon with, and something that changes as the years pass.Focus tracks “Come Back Home,” “Knower (Again),” “New Brothers” and “Canyon Call” offer entry points into the album’s emotional and musical range. “Come Back Home” builds from a slow-burning flame into an impassioned anthem, while harmonica brings added fire to “New Brothers.” With sparse, playful percussion, “Canyon Call” finds Salvage returning home to reconnect with his identity and the things that sustain him.Elsewhere, “A Letter” confronts the cycle of repeated mistakes and hard-earned lessons, while the folk ballad “Torn and Crooked” pairs keys and strings with a candid examination of emptiness. Throughout, Salvage balances the weight of his subject matter with warmth, patience and the drive to keep moving.
The album took roughly two and a half years to complete, reflecting Salvage’s determination to give these songs the time they needed.“My mindset while making it was always to assume it would be the last thing I would ever put out, so I should take as much time as needed before calling it done,” he explained to BG Independent. The result is a deeply personal heartland rock record that finds connection in the details: the roads traveled, the relationships that linger, and the pull of the place that first made you who you are.John Salvage will perform November 2, 2026, at The Painted Lady Lounge in Hamtramck, Michigan.Listen and connect: Bandcamp | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube  | Spotify
