| Darryl Jenifer—bassist, songwriter, and founding member of legendary hardcore innovators Bad Brains—has released his new instrumental album, The Weather Channel, available today via Org Music on LP, CD, and digital formats.Arriving more than four decades after Jenifer helped redraw the boundaries of punk with Bad Brains, The Weather Channel finds him continuing that restless creative journey through exploratory jazz, fusion, dub, psychedelia, and funk. The album’s focus track, “Re-Ignition II,” revisits a Bad Brains song originally written by Jenifer, recasting its intensity and rhythmic drive within the album’s expansive instrumental setting.Rather than simply recreating the original, “Re-Ignition II” approaches the composition from a new perspective. Its familiar foundation becomes the launching point for fluid interplay, improvisation, and deep grooves, connecting Jenifer’s groundbreaking past with the musical territory he continues to explore today.The Weather Channel follows Jenifer’s acclaimed 2010 solo debut, In Search of Black Judas, and features a powerhouse quartet consisting of Jenifer, drummer and percussionist Ben Perowsky, guitarist Karma “Chogyi” Marco, and keyboardist John Medeski. Together, the musicians move freely across genres while maintaining the urgency, imagination, and collaborative energy that have defined Jenifer’s work throughout his career.Across 11 tracks, the album presents nine original compositions alongside new interpretations of two Bad Brains songs. Punk energy and dub-heavy rhythms remain part of Jenifer’s musical vocabulary, but here they are woven into adventurous ensemble performances shaped by spontaneity, atmosphere, and rhythmic exploration.Previously released singles “Sacred Love II” and “Loves Harmony” offered early glimpses into the album’s wide-ranging sound. “Loves Harmony” features melodica from the late jazz legend Jack DeJohnette and string arrangements by acclaimed composer and educator Karl Berger, whose contributions bring additional warmth and dimension to the recording.More than a look back, The Weather Channelrepresents another step forward for an artist whose career has consistently challenged musical expectations.
