Today, comedian, actor, singer, and writer Jordan Firstman releases Secrets, an often poignant and deeply funny concept album out now via Capitol Records. The genre-spanning set builds on his viral social media series of the same name and includes features from across music and film: Rufus Wainwright, Julia Fox, Rachel Sennott, Suki Waterhouse, LAUNDRY DAY, Bloodhound Gang’s Jimmy Pop, and Firstman’s mom, among others. Listen HERE. Secrets arrives alongside a video for “I’m quitting my job tomorri,” a wistful track that finds Firstman channelling the airy hooks of Pink Pantheress and loaded verses of Central Cee over a busy UK garage beat. The song’s lyrics, which capture a couple at a pivotal moment in their relationship, are equal parts satirical and sincere, a duality reflected in the visual. Watch HERE. The song’s title includes an intentional typo — the subjects of Secrets’ songs come from real secrets that Firstman’s followers submitted to him on social media. He’s been collecting their “deepest, darkest, and dirtiest” confessions since 2020 via Instagram sessions where he opens up his DMs, then anonymously shares his favorite submissions along with advice, commentary, and/or musical interpretations. Firstmanrecently dove deep into the project’s pandemic origins and unexpected outcomes via features with Billboard and InStyle. He also visited The Drew Barrymore Show for a friendly sit-down and impromptu performance written for the occasion. Firstman previously shared the raucous dance-punk anthem “I wanna see my friends dicks,” a feel-good celebration of fraternal bonding that’s since inspired flash mobs, as well as cheeky country song “My sisters tryin’ to fuck and she needs to chill.” Secrets also includes faithful forays into crooner jazz, Auto-Tuned R&B, motorik EDM, post-punk, funk-rock, Lilith Fair pop, and much more. Teaming up with four seasoned producers — Brad Oberhofer, Blake Slatkin, Zach Dawes, and Sega Bodega — Firstman let the submitted song titles dictate the sound. Firstman’s social media presence — which includes his beloved Impressions series — has earned him an incredible audience including nearly 1 million followers across Instagram and TikTok, celebrity fans like Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and Chrissy Teigen (as logged in Vulture), and swooning press including DAZED who raved that, “Jordan Firstman’s Instagram impressions saved 2020.” He’s also been beamed into theaters and homes, appearing in both film (Netflix ensemble rom-com You People, indie comedy-thriller Rotting in the Sun) and TV, with recurring roles on acclaimed shows like FX’s English Teacher and Disney+’s Ms. Marvel. He will next be seen starring in Rachel Sennott’s upcoming yet-untitled series for HBO. Firstman has been singing since he was a child and while his public music history is lesser known, he’s previously shared a pitch-perfect impression of a TikTok singer, made a “fun funeral playlist” for THE FACE, and written a legendary Laura Dern tributeperformed by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles at the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards. Secrets reveals him to be as funny and socially penetrating as ever, but also a strikingly gifted singer and songwriter.
